The Annual Gala Day was first established in 1911, on the one day of the year that all the local miners, mill workers etc had the day off. Over the years, the Gala Day grew into what it is today, with the introduction of a queen and attendants at the 1953 Coronation Gala Day.
The 2016 gala day will take place on Saturday 11th June 2016 We are currently in the process or looking for local groups to take part in the procession. If you are part of a local group and would like to advertise your group by taking part please get in touch.
Each year we hope to make it bigger and better than the last and with the re introduction of the fun fair on a Saturday as well as the Friday.
The Gala takes a lot of organising, although it is one day with a civic week leading up to it, the committee work tirelessly throughout the year, organising fund raising & various events, ensuring all the correct paperwork is in place, the licenses are in place. We also have to liaise with all the local agencies, including, police, ambulance, council etc. We have to book bands, entertainment, organise the sports, trophies, the pageant, catering etc., the list is endless, and we really could use some more people coming along and helping. If you can spare an hour a week or month we would really love you to come along and help.
This is a day for all the people of Blackburn to enjoy but it is mainly aimed at the children. All our meetings take place in Blackburn Community Centre. We would normally meet on a 2 weekly basis up until Easter then meet weekly until the Civic week, when we meet nightly after each event to see how things went, what we can improve on, we then have a wrap meeting after the gala day, to go over how we felt everything was, public complaints, praise etc. If you would like to join the Committee or help out in any way, please get in touch or come along to one of our meetings.
